The 38th Annual Istanbul Eurasia Marathon:
Sunday, November 13, 2016
(6 days/5 nights)

Itinerary:

The Istanbul Marathon is a very special race, as the course is one-in-a-million.  How many marathons can boast that they start in Asia and end in Europe? How many marathons start with the first two miles traversing one of Europe’s greatest bridges, a suspension bridge that spans two continents and crosses one of the most spectacular waterways in the world, the Bosphorus Strait? And, yes, most marathons do indeed run through the major historic sites of a city, but which ones boast a finish line at the Byzantine-era Hippodrome, the center of Byzantine civic life and home to the Obelisk of Thutmose, which dates to 1490 BC?

If you are a marathoner looking for the next great race to run, this is a must.

Arrive at Ataturk Airport and enjoy a private transfer to your centrally-located hotel. At approximately 5:30 PM, we will guide you on a walking tour. Some of the noteworthy places on the route include: the Little Hagia Sophia (formerly the Church of the Saints Sergius & Bacchus), Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Mosque, Hippodrome with Serpent Column, Obelisk of Thutmosis III, the Walled Obelisk, the Remains of the Sphendone, the neo-Byzantine German Fountain, Hurrem Sultan Hamam, the Million Stone, the Burnt Column, and of course, the Hagia Sophia Museum. While walking, we will stop to try some local street food and your guide will point out some restaurants that you may enjoy for dinner. A welcome reception will be held later at the hotel.

This morning, we visit some iconic sites in Istanbul, including the Byzantine Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia Museum and the underground Basilica Cistern. In the afternoon, we visit the Grand Bazaar. (B)

Begin the morning with an extensive tour of the sprawling Topkapi Palace, former residence of the Ottoman sultans for 400 years. We also pay a special visit to the Harem section of the palace complex (the sultan’s private apartments).  These lavish quarters once consisted of some 400 rooms presided over by the sultan’s mother, guarded by eunuchs, and only open to the sultan’s family. Rounding out our day will be a visit to the iconic Spice Market. (B)

Today is at your leisure. You can continue to explore the city on your own, should you choose to. (We can suggest options for other tours.) This evening, we will have a pre-race pasta dinner at the hotel. (B, D)

Today, your guide and driver will be at your service – they will get you to the starting point on time in the morning. The race’s finish line is very close to your hotel. (B)

After breakfast, we’ll transfer you to Istanbul Ataturk airport for your flight home, or to your next destination. (B)

Optional extensions to other parts of Turkey are available, just ask a CTCTurkey Travel Consultant.
